Rachel Maddow

At my house we are fascinated that such a big honkin' variety of lesbian is on primetime television. And we're thrilled, of course. But we're intrigued by how this tomboy of the highest order is femmed up for television. Below is a before-and-after comparison. Also, on TV she's exposing a distracting amount of flesh, what with the extra-long neck and the plunging camisole. This is apparently an unwavering wardrobe policy. There is evidence, however, that her off-camera sartorial choices consist of flannel, Elvis Costello glasses, and hipster skateboard sneakers. In fact, The New York Times Magazine recently quoted Maddow saying she wears the sneakers while on air with the camisole-and-ladysuit combo; you just can't see them because she's standing behind that odd counter like she's ready to take your order at Wendy's. The sneakers remind her of who she really is, she says. Which means: A big ole lesbian. If you didn't see the piece in the Sunday Times Magazine–which also featured a photo of her Ford pickup truck a la Northampton–well, you should subscribe.

Nada Surf Vinyl Box Set

For the other vinyl fans out there, this is a must-have. I had been saving for it for months, and just placed my pre-order for the Nov. 25 release. I will quote Insound,
Barsuk spared no expense in assembling this amazing Nada Surf box set. It's weighty (over 5 lbs.) and impressive, containing five albums on six pieces of vinyl, a 7" single, plus ample additional goodies. Even the sturdy box itself (two separate pieces, the top NADA half fitting securely onto a collar on the bottom SURF half) is a substantial piece of collector's joy, designed by acclaimed NYC artists Kayrock and Wolfy. The box set includes all five full-length studio LPs, including Elektra debut High/Low (available on vinyl exclusively in this box set), The Proximity Effect, Let Go, The Weight Is a Gift, and Lucky. Also included is a repressing of the band's long out of print debut 7" single "The Plan/Telescope;" a 24-page full-color 12x12" booklet which includes lyrics for all the LPs, exclusive photos and tour poster reproductions; and single-use full album download codes for The Proximity Effect, Let Go, The Weight Is a Gift, and Lucky PLUS a very special bonus download folder with 16 b-sides and rarities. The box set is numbered and strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide.

Raison d'être

I've started this blog because I want a place to read about lesbian news, issues, and gossip, and I'm tired of AfterEllen.com. I'm tired of AfterEllen for a few reasons, the first of which being that I tried more than once to open an account with them so that I could add my posts alongside those posted by the baby dykes, but I was denied, rejected, disconfirmed, and overall ignored in my attempts. I have no explanation. The second reason I'm tired of AfterEllen is that I do not know half the celebrities featured on the site. They are on shows I've never heard of aired on networks I don't watch. (CW?) I fear I may be becoming a grump, but, still, I just can't keep track of all these lovely straight young women who I'm supposed to find appealing simply because they're young and lovely and bi-curious. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But I can't help but think AfterEllen has become some bizarre outlying promotional division of the Hollywood machine. And I will have none of it.

On this blog we can expect to find the following: Unconfirmed gossip about lesbians that I read on other blogs or in The National Enquirer, socio-political yammering with lofty ambitions, tributes to underappreciated women, random observations, thoughts on Orwell, the mass media, propaganda, art museums, and, of course, one of civilization's greatest creations: museum cafés.
