A little horn tooting is in order.

Two things happened in June that bear mentioning.

This blog, now four and a quarter years old, reached the 500,000 hit plateau. Thanks to all my readers for sticking with me for whatever silly nonsense pops into my head.

The other blog, which has only existed a year and a half, has also reached the 500,000 hit mark. As you might expect, it's growing very fast. Since the end of June last year, about 200,000 hits have been registered at Lotsa 'Splainin' 2 Do, while over 470,000 visits have been marked at It's News 2 Them™.

As of midnight on June 30, this blog has had about 508,000 hits, while the other blog is just over 507,000. By Saturday, possibly even late Friday, this blog will be surpassed, an event I knew would happen eventually. If there is some small consolation, people who visit here tend to stay a slightly longer time and more people comment here, though I do not have a squadron of loyal commenters the way my blog hero/heroine Princess Sparkle Pony does. Peteykins' terrific slice of the Interwebs will soon have its two millionth visitor, and there are few places on the web more deserving of loyalty in my never humble opinion.

Anyone who reads my stuff knows how I love numbers, so I couldn't let these milestones pass unnoticed. I expect the next milestone will be the millionth visitor over at the gossip blog, which if things stay as they are going now could be about a year away.

Debacle per l'U17, la Germania serve il poker agli Usa

Brutta uscita di scena per la selezione under 17 degli Usa nei mondiali di categoria in corso di svolgimento in Messico. Gli americani guidati dal tecnico colombiano Wilmer Cabrera escono pesantemente di scena dalla kermesse incassando un pesante 4-0 dalla Germania negli ottavi.

Partita senza storia, a senso unico in favore dei teutonici guidati in panchina da Steffen Freund, ex mediano del Borussia Dortmund, che mettono subito in chiaro le cose schiacciando gli americani e mettendo pressione alla fragile difesa che al 21' lascia tutto solo Korey Gunther di trafiggere McIntosh.

Al 40' arriva il raddoppio a firma di Mitchell Weiser, ed ancora prima dell'intervallo il tris taglia gambe di Samed Yesil. In avvio di ripresa le già modeste speranze di riaprire la contesa erano chiuse dal poker di Marvin Ducksch (50').

Not All That Great

That is, the state of American soccer isn't all that great.

The men were pounded by Mexico and the women looked less than convincing in their win against North Korea, which apparently would have been a loss had the Koreans not suffered tragic misfortune in the days leading up to the World Cup.

The men had a dream start to their Gold Cup final against Mexico, scoring twice in the first half hour of the match to take a 2-0 lead.  The next hour, however, was basically an evisceration of the Yanks' defense as Mexico showed off all of its attacking talent and at the same time exposed the weakness and lack of depth of the American backline.

An overwhelmingly pro-Mexico crowd and the delivery of the post-match honors primarily in Spanish rankled both American supporters and some of their players, but were just salt in the wounds for a disappointing performance in the tournament as a whole and particularly in the final. While their defensive deficiencies can be explained by some extent to the early substitution of right back Steve Cherundolo, it's hard to believe that his presence would have made much of a difference, with central defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Clarence Goodson looking slow and Cherundolo's replacement Jonathan Bornstein completely out of his element.

Post-match commentary has been critical of coach Bob Bradley, suggesting that it is time for him to go so that a new man may be in place and fully in charge before World cup qualifying begins. Given that Bradley received a new four year contract shortly after the last World Cup, a replacement seems unlikely, although U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati seemed somewhat equivocal regarding his confidence in Bradley immediately following the Mexico match.

I think Bradley is in a damned if he does and damned if he doesn't situation -- criticized for being predictable, he actually tried some new things at the Gold Cup that worked (featuring Freddy Adu, then starting him, with considerable success, in the final; installing Eric Lichaj at left back) and some that didn't (mostly, naming Bornstein to the squad in the first place). The biggest thing that Bradley seems to have in his favor is that contract, and the fact that by all appearances U.S. Soccer attempted to find a big profile successor after the 2010 World Cup without success.

The women started their World Cup with a 2-0 over North Korea. The North Koreans were very young (10 players on their roster are under 20) and were technically skilled and the more consistently dangerous team in the first half, which ended 0-0. The Americans ramped up their attack in the second half and won 2-0.

After the match, perhaps keeping in mind the humiliation to which the North Korean men's squad was subjected after their 2010 World Cup, the Korean coach explained the "real" reason why his team lost. Lightning. That's right, Kim-Kwang-min claimed that his keeper and his defenders (or strikers, depending on the translation) were victims of a lightning strike in training leading up to the match, leading to their substandard performance in the second half.

While the U.S. women probably won't have to hope that the Colombian women, their next opponents, suffered a similar fate in order to beat them, they will still have to show improvement, or hope for divine intervention, before facing Sweden (to whom they lost 2-1 in January) in the final match of group play, which will likely determine which team will be the number one seed in the group entering the knockout phase of the tournament.

I Sounders tra la Lazio e Cissè?

Più che un rumor, questa è la storia di una telenovela infinita. E lo è perchè ad alimentarla, come spesso accade nel calcio, è l'entourage del giocatore in questione che poi è quello del discusso e pittoresco attaccante francese Dijbril Cissé.

Giocatore bizzoso e spesso ingestibile per i club non solo in campo, ma soprattutto fuori. Cissé è ancora vincolato da un anno di contratto con il Panathinaikos, un ricchissimo contratto bisogna sottolineare che però stride in modo eclatante con la delicata situazione economica del paese ellenico ed il giocatore avrebbe espresso il desiderio di cambiar aria.

Così i suoi procuratori hanno proposto il nazionale transalpino per mari e per monti, solleticando tra l'altro l'attenzione anche della Lazio del presidente Lotito che appare come la squadra più interessata ad averlo anche perchè solleticata di avere tra le sue fila l'uomo che con le sue reti estromesse la Roma dall'Europa League 2009/10.

Tuttavia per alzare la posta in palio, pardon l'ingaggio contrattuale sono gli stessi agenti che hanno fatto circolare la voce di un sontuoso ingaggio proposto dai Seattle Sounders superiore ai dieci milioni di dollari.

L'interesse dei Sounders c'è ed è innegabile, i termini del contratto potrebbero essere veritieri ma appaiono gonfiati e probabilmenti rivolti al prossimo futuro visto che la MLS di norma offre cifre consistenti ai free agents... Probabilmente ne riparleremo in una prossima puntata tra un paio d'anni raccontando un nuovo capitolo di una storia infinita.

MLS Waiver List: altri quattro in uscita

I team della MLS si avvicinano alla prossima finestra di mercato di luglio con la testa rivolta nel presente a recuperare posti nel roster e più ancora denaro dal salary cap per poi investirlo sui nuovi arrivi.

Così giunge notizia che i DC United hanno tagliato anche il brasiliano Junior Carreiro, il giovanissimo fratello minore di Fred che andrà in Australia e forse porterà anche il "brother". I Chicago Fire hanno tagliato il rookie 22enne Davis Paul impiegato per appena 45' in una sola gara con i Galaxy in quest stagione.

Altro rookie in uscita ai Columbus Crew dove nella waiver list è finito Paul Adlard. Ad Houston si conclude l'esperienza del difensore Jordan Graye: prodotto dell'Academy dei DC che era stato acquistato dai Portland Timbers nell'expansion e poi ceduto ai Dynamo dove non ha convinto, ed ora resterà da capire se ci sarà un team disposto a puntare su di lui.

Contrariamente ad alcuni rumors, i Seattle Sounders hanno rinnovato ancora il contratto all'infortunato cronico Pat Noonan, mentre potrebbero tagliare nel reparto difensivo uno tra Leo Gonzalez e Patrick Ianni al centro di alcune trattative per possibili scambi. Invece, il team "emeralds" ha ceduto on loan per 4 gare il mancino ghanese Michael Tetteh agli Orlando City SC.

Yes, hypothetical question asker, I know My People read my blog. I am also aware that I haven't posted a giant woman picture since last February, which means two giantess posts in 2011 so far, compared to nine in all of 2010.

Gracious me, I don't know where the time goes. My heartfelt apologies to fans of pandering everywhere.

Schelotto: saluta il calcio con l'amaro della retrocessione del Gimnasia

Epilogo amaro per la carriera dell'argentino Guillermo "el mellizo" Barros Schelotto che non riesce ad evitare al Gimnasia La Plata la retrocessione nello spareggio con il San Martin San Juan e così accompagnerà nella seconda serie il Quilmes, l'Huracan e per la prima volta nella sua storia ultra centenaria anche i "milionarios" del River Plate.

Profonda l'amarezza dell'ex fantasista di Boca Juniors e Columbus Crew che era tornato al club dei suoi esordi lo scorso gennaio dopo che il team dell'Ohio aveva deciso di non prolungare il contratto seppur tra mille rimpianti dell'head coach Robert Warzycha, costretto a prendere atto di un budget ridotto oltre dei frequenti acciacchi dell'argentino.

Questa, infatti, è stata l'ultima gara della carriera di Schelotto che ha abbandonato il campo insieme ai compagni comunque tra gli applausi del pubblico di La Plata, e meritandosi un saluto speciale da parte del giocatore che ha voluto sottolineare il diverso atteggiamento rispetto a quanto successo domenica dentro e fuori il "Monumental" di Buenos Aires: "Siete un esempio per tutti".

Women W.C.2011: Esce di scena il Canada della Morace

Era considerato dagli esperti il "girone della morte", ovvero il più difficile ed equilibrato dei mondiali di calcio femminile in corso in Germania e che includeva le padrone di casa, la Francia, la Nigeria ed il Canada.

Le nord-americane dell'allenatrice italiana Carolina Morace erano molto attese sia perchè vi arrivavano da team vincitrice della Concacaf Gold Cup, e con l'ambizione di dover poi ospitare la prossima edizione.

Tutto però rinviato al 2015 perchè dopo la sconfitta di misura con la fortissima rappresentativa tedesca, arriva una pessima figura contro la Francia nella seconda gara che si conclude sul 4-0 per le transalpine.

Una pesante debacle per il gruppo della Morace che soccombe nettamente e goffamente. L'affondano le incertezze del reparto arretrato con una pessima serata per la Le Blanc che deve inchinarsi per due volte alla Thiney (splendido secondo gol), all'Abily e alla Thomis. Tra le canadesi si salva per l'impegno la solita Christine Sinclair, ma non era giornata ed ora si preparano le valigie anche se c'è da salvare l'onore nel match con la Nigeria.

NE Revolution: rilasciati sia Stolica che Perovic

I New England Revolution hanno reso noto che rilasceranno sia Ilija Stolica che Marko Perovic dopo averne declinato le opzioni di rinnovo dei contratti con la MLS.

Una mossa in parte preventivata per il primo che settimane addietro era stato anche ceduto on loan ai New York FC in USL Pro, dove però presto se ne sono perse le traccie e pare ciò anche perchè il giocatore non avesse gradito il trasferimento.

Meno attesa la cessione del secondo, uno dei beniamini dei tifosi e leader in campo per le sue qualità tecniche, tuttavia a causa di un serio infortunio la sua stagione si è verosimilmente già conclusa. Qui, invece, a decidere per il divorzio è stato il giocatore ex Basilea che ha chiesto a Mike Burns e allo staff dirigenziale dei Revs di non esercitare il rinnovo perchè avrebbe gradito riavvicinarsi a casa.

Con i due addii di Stolica e Perovic, il salary cap sarà liberato di una cifra consistente che sarà impiegata nella prossima finestra di mercato di luglio per assicurare un elemento in grado di far riemergere dai bassi fondi della classifica il team di Boston, probabilmente un atteso Designated Player.

The new toys have arrived, Part 2.

Yay, even more new toys have arrived. These are regular polygons that can be used to fill an infinite plane with a repeating pattern.

These shapes are not magnetic like the Penrose tiles, but they come in four colors and five shapes, regular polygons with three sides (equilateral triangles), four sides (squares), six sides (regular hexagons), eight sides (regular octagons) and twelve sides (regular dodecagons).

A few years back, I drew pictures of some of the possible mix and match patterns that create regular tilings of the plane, and now I can re-create these with the new toys. This shot shows that the number of pieces used is finite.

But if I take a close-up, you can see that this could be part of a pattern that repeats indefinitely.

Stuff That Should Stay Where It Is -- the Pro Sports Edition

A couple of weeks ago, during their Stanley Cup run, the Boston Bruins media crew co-opted Wiz Khalifa's 'Black and Yellow.' Mmmmmmm, I'm gonna say that's just the kind of thing that's not done, or that you shouldn't do, or that you should be banished if you do it. I believe when it happened, I suggested that those guys be taken out and tazed, then shot in the face repeatedly. That's a bit harsh. This sort of filching is not quite a death penalty transgression, but it is the kind of thing that should make you a pariah.

It's like dating your friend's ex. Is it technically, letter of the law wrong? Probably not. But it's gross, it indicates a lack of feeling, a lack of ethics, perhaps even a lack of a soul.

It also bespeaks a revolting lack of originality.

But it got me to thinking, what traditions, songs and other sports ephemera are off limits, the province of one specific team or specific city?

1. The Detroit Red Wings pretty much own the entire Journey catalog. You know, if you want to play 'Faithfully' or 'Wheels in the Sky' or 'Any Way You Want It,' I suppose I won't take you to task too hard. But there is no budging on this: 'Don't Stop Believin'' is the Red Wings thing. It just is. (Yes, I'm looking at you Bruins staff. Again. Creativity. Look it up. Then get some.)

2. It's not all bad in Boston. 'Sweet Caroline' and 'Dirty Water' are the exclusive properties of the Boston Red Sox. Also, any and all Boston teams should feel free to use the Dropkick Murphy's, 'I'm Shipping Up to Boston,' at any time. For everybody else -- verboten.

3. The Rally Monkey? Always an Anaheim thing, even though they call themselves the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim these days. This is perhaps the most inspired, just plain goofy thing I can think of. The Angels are losing, and the stadium media crew just put this little guy on the jumbotron. A Rally Monkey is born. Genius.

4. If you catch a home run ball and you're not a Cubs fan at Wrigley Field? Hold on to it. You look like an all-world jackass throwing it back. Unlike this guy, who is clearly not a jackass. I don't know why it's kinda cool when Cubs fans do it, but it is. It's just pathetic everywhere else.

5. Let's do away with the annoying singing of God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch of all Sunday MLB games, and give that song back to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Toronto: Arrivano Frings & Koevermans

Doppio colpo dei Toronto FC, guidati in panchina dall'ex centrocampista di Ajax, Lazio e Inter Aron Winter, alla ricerca di una netta inversione di marcia nella seconda parte del torneo.

Il club canadese ha infatti uscito fuori i dollari, ed ha definito gli ingaggi di due giocatori europei di grande spessore internazionale, sebbene forse ormai alle loro ultime cartuccie da sparare: ovvero il mediano tedesco Torsten Frings (1976) ed il centravanti olandese Danny Koevermans (1978).

Ulltra trentenni, grandi esperienze e due contratti da "designated players" che peseranno in modo dimezzato sul salary cup di un team inizialmente costruito con parsimonia economica privilegiando i giovani e semi sconosciuti a qualche nome importante per una tifoseria che aveva a più riprese storto il naso alle scelte del consulente Juergen Klinsmann, e del nuovo tandem tecnico composto dal g.m. Paul Mariner nonchè dall'ex tecnico della squadra primavera dell'Ajax.

L'indiscrezione sull'ex nazionale tedesco Frings era gia trapelata nelle settimane passate, quasi a rompere gli indugi di trattative già intercorse con la MLS nel recente passato con la grande spinta di "Klinsi" a convincere il giocatore in svincolo dal Werder Brema di scegliere l'opzione Toronto.

Diverso il discorso con Koevermans, in scadenza contrattuale anch'egli e reduce da una stagione di molta, troppa, panchina al PSV. Allo sfumare della trattativa con il Birmingham City il trentaudenne centravanti ha preferito optare per l'esperienza in Nord America ad un ruolo di secondo piano in club olandesi o europei in genere.

Il duo sarà impiegabile dalla riapertura della finestra di mercato internazionale per la MLS ovvero dal prossimo 15 luglio.

Montreal Impact: ritorna Sebrango

All'indomani dell'addio del tecnico Marc Dos Santos, i Montreal Impact tornano a riabbracciare uno dei loro beniamini: l'attaccante, cubano di nascita, Eduardo Sebrango.

Solo poche settimane addietro, era il 18 aprile quando dopo aver a lungo atteso una proposta per la stagione corrente Sebrango aveva deciso di appendere i suoi scarpini ed entrare nello staff tecnico delle giovanili del club del Quebec.

Ora l'attaccante ritorna sui suoi passi, e dopo aver ripreso ad allenarsi con la squadra dalla metà di giugno ha anche convinto tutti sulle sue motivazioni e con la speranza che la sua esperienza possa essere utile a far maturare i tanti giovani presenti nel roster allestito dalla famiglia Saputo per l'ultima stagione in Nasl, prima del passaggio alla MLS.

Sebrango come detto precedentemente è nato a Sancti Spiritus nell'isola di Cuba nel 1973, ma ne, 1998 emigrò dapprima in Canada approdando ai Vancouver (86ers) per poi militare nei Rochester Rhinos e negli Hershey Wildcats, quindi dal 2002 al 2005 la prima parentesi a Montreal, seguito da un ritorno a Vancouver (rinominati Whitecaps) dal 2006 al 2008, ed infine un nuovo ritorno agli Impact.

Memorabile resta la sua partita nei quarti d'andata della Concacaf Champions League 2008/2009 contro i messicani del Santos Laguna in cui Sebrango mise a segno una doppietta che valse il successo agli Impact, poi vanificato nel ritorno in Messico

New York gets it right: Separate but equal is not the American way

Let's celebrate the passage of gay marriage in New York for the wonderful advancement in civil rights that it is. Let's thank NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo for being the champion of this cause. Let's recognize Rosie O'Donnell's hard-working brother, NY Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, for sponsoring the legislation. And let's also offer a very special congratulations to the lovely lesbians in Manhattan who are displaying their rings beside the historic front page of June 25th edition of The New York Times.

Now, let's also urge President Obama to recognize that he cannot be a true advocate for equal rights if he continues to oppose gay marriage. President Obama says his views are "evolving," and he recently has stated support for civil unions. While I appreciate that he is making some progress toward promoting equal rights for all American citizens, I am baffled that he cannot see how he is essentially promoting a "separate but equal" policy. As we know, the US Supreme Court in 1954 determined that this country cannot have separate but equal treatment of American citizens because separate is, in the words of the court, "inherently unequal" and a violation of the Constitution.

Let me offer yet another perspective on how far behind President Obama is in his reluctant and late support of civil unions: Republican candidate for president Gov. Jon Huntsman of Utah fought for civil unions in his state TWO YEARS AGO. And our Democratic president is just getting there now? And in sentiment only; he has sent no bill to Congress. Mr. President, it's time to move ahead of Republicans in your position on gay rights. Support equality. Support gay marriage. It's the American way.

99 cents. In 2011, that is officially ridiculously cheap, the way stuff costing nickels and dimes used to be when I was a sprout. Cheap is not evil.

Sturdy, cheap re-cycled plastic. Recycled is not evil.

You paid to carry around the company logo, so there's some evil.

If you go to TJs with a bag you can sign up for a lottery for a $25 gift certificate, but Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four made too deep an impression on me. I'm not convinced anyone actually wins these lotteries. So, also some evil.

But when I go to Lucky, they give me a nickel off for any re-usable bag, even one with somebody else's logo on it. These things pay for themselves in about a month for me, and I keep them way longer than a month.

So TJ's has competitors pay customers to buy advertising for TJ's. Evil, but they have cut the consumer out of the "who gets screwed?" equation, so significantly not evil.

And then there's the brilliance of finding a distinctive bag design and sticking with it. I can spot one of these bags one hundred yards away, easy peasy. I expect that you can as well. This is marketing genius up there with The Swoosh and the Golden Arches.

So, the power of marketing used to save the consumer money and reduce the amount of wasted paper and plastic in the world. In the Matty Boy version of this equation, this is big on the plus side with only a tiny residue of evil.

And to toot my own horn just a li'l bit, when Matty Boy makes an equation, he gets it right at least nine times out of ten.

Vince, ma non convince appieno la compagine femminile degli Usa nel debutto nella kermesse mondiale 2011 in svolgimento in Germania. Le americane guidate in panchina dalla svedese Pia Sundhage a Dresda sono chiamate ad affrontare una compagine come la Nord Corea nel complesso poco conosciuta che anche per ragioni extra sportive legate a vicende politiche tra i due paesi gioca con grande dinamismo ed agonismo.

Elementi che si rivelano ostici per le americane, forse troppo compassate nel ritmo con un gioco poggiato sulla prestanza atletica, e non è un caso che per una prodezza di una singola per poco le asiatiche non trovavano la rete con il pallone che si poggia sul montante prima di spegnersi sul fondo.

In quanto a legni ed occasioni create le americane non scherzano, ma il duo Wambach-Rodriguez è in giornata di scarso feeling, ed allora a metterci lo zampino sono chiamate con le loro reti prima la "bella" Lauren Cheney (foto dx) con un colpo di testa "piazzato" sul palo alla destra della numero uno coreana, e poi sugli sviluppi di una mischia di occasioni mancate arriva il sigillo personale per il difensore mancino Rachel Buehler (foto in alto).
