Whitecaps: contratto siglato anche con Akloul

I Vancouver Whitecaps aggiungono un altro elemento al proprio roster MLS pescando ancora tra i componenti dell'organico del passato torneo di D2 presenti al lungo training camp intrapreso: si tratta del ventottenne difensore franco-algerino Mouloud Akloul (1983).

Sfortunatissima la sua esperienza ai 'Caps lo scorso anno, appena 2 presenze ed 1 gol, ma proprio nel segnare questo si infortunò seriamente. Akloul è nato in Francia a Lorient dove mosse anche i primi passi della sua carriera per poi militare nelle serie minori francesi ed algerini, prima di un'esperienza negli Emirati Arabi Uniti (Al Ittihad Kalba) che precedette l'esperienza in Nord America.

Tra i vari partecipanti ai camp dei 'Caps restano ancora non contrattualizzato il centrocampista elvetico Gashi e l'attaccante di St. Vincent Cornelius Stewart.

Toronto FC: rinforzata la difesa con Williams

I Toronto FC aggiungono un altro tassello al proprio roster rinforzando il pacchetto arretrato dell'undici guidato dall'olandese Aron Winter con il difensore centrale giamaicano Dicoy Williams.

Williams, classe 1986, era già stato nel preseason in prova con i "reds" raggiungendo la squadra durante il Carolina Challenge Cup e destando una positiva impressione. Tuttavia il team canadese ha preferito soppesare la scelta anche in considerazione dello status di "International" da attribbuirgli nel roster per non inficiare altre opportunità presenti sul mercato.

Ora però i Toronto hanno sciolto le riserve, ed ingaggiato Dicoy Williams prelevandolo dall'Harbor View, formazione del massimo torneo giamaicano.

Anche Cristian Arrieta agli Strikers

La "carriera" a stelle e strisce di Cristian Arrieta, il difensore italo-americano famoso in Italia per esser stato uno dei protagonisti della prima edizione del reality calcistico "Campioni - Il sogno", proseguirà nella stagione 2011 con la maglia dei Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

Per il difensore nat0 nel settembre del 1979 ad Orlando è quasi un ritorno a "casa" visto l'ingaggio con la compagine della Florida che prenderà a parte al torneo di D2 organizzato dalla lega Nasl sotto sanzione provvisoria per il 2011 dell'USSF.

Nel 2010 Arrieta aveva coronato un altro mezzo sogno approdando nella Major League Soccer con l'expansion team dei Philadelphia Union sotto la guida del tecnico polacco Peter Nowak con cui è sceso in campo in 16 gare di campionato prima che l'ex leccese finisse ai margini della prima squadra.

Dopo poche sedute di allenamento nel preseason 2011, gli Union hanno ufficializzato il taglio del giocatore al pari dell'argentino Eduardo Coudet che solo pochi giorni addietro l'aveva preceduto firmando anch'egli per gli Strikers. Successivamente Arrieta ha svolto una parte del precampionato unendosi al training camp dei Dallas FC, tuttavia senza ottenere un ingaggio.

La carriera in Nord America di Arrieta è iniziata quasi per caso con un periodo di training camp con i Puerto Rico Islanders, formazione dell'allora USL-1, con cui ha disputati due ottime stagioni - 2008 e 2009 - distinguendosi anche nella Concacaf Champions League e venendo premiato sia come miglior difensore in entrambe le stagioni, e quale MVP del torneo 2009.

Gli Stikers puntano molto sulle capacità di Arrieta per irrobustire il loro reparto arretrato oltre che ottenere un contributo anche in fase offensiva come testimoniano le 17 reti ed i tanti assist forniti nell'esperienza con la formazione del tecnico nord-irlandese Colin Clarke.

Dal settembre 2010, Arrieta ha scelto di difendere i colori della nazionale del Puerto Rico con cui ha preso parte alle fasi eliminatorie della CFU.

US Open Cup 2011: i Fire eliminano i Rapids

Prima gara dei quarti di finali nei preliminari tra ben dieci team MLS per qualificare appena due compagini in quota alla lega da aggiungere alle sei ammesse già di diritto alla terza fase della competizione nazionale a cui partecipano tutti i tean (in verità in questa edizione sono stati esclusi clamorosamente quelli della Nasl) della piramide del soccer a stelle e strisce.

I Chicago Fire estromettono dalla competizione i Colorado Rapids, vincitori dell'ultima MLS Cup, vincendo per 2-1 nella sfida disputata a Peoria sul Shea Stadium, terreno di gioco della Bradley University.

Fire avanti in chiusura di tempo avanti con l'uruguayano Gaston Puerari, pari dei Rapids appena un minuto e mezzo dopo l'inizio della ripresa con Andre Akpan, ed al 61' gol vittoria del "rookie" Jalil Anibaba (foto sx) con una conclusione dai 45 yards sorprende Ian Joyce.

Il prossimo avversario dei Fire uscirà dalla sfida dei quarti tra San Josè Earthquakes e Portland Timbers ancora da programmare dopo che i secondi ieri hanno estromesso i Chivas Usa (2-0).

The Drop

Every year around this time throughout Europe sportswriters and commentators and fans start talking about The Drop.  Relegation and promotion (or, I guess, promotion and relegation if your glass is half full) are features of almost every professional soccer league in the world not in the U.S. or Australia.

Rather ironic, since relegation is the most democratic, or Darwinian, of all sporting concepts. Each year in one or two or three of the clubs that finish in the bottom of the standings of a league will be relegated to the next division down, and the same number of clubs will be promoted, either by virtue of their finish in their league during the regular season or by a playoff, to the next higher division. So while clubs in, say, China will (theoretically) rise or fall each year on their own merits, those in the U.S. are among the few that are always safely ensconced in the highest professional division of the sport.

Because of the way professional sports teams developed in the United States, with a small number of clubs owned usually by one individual or entity, promotion and relegation never took hold here. In Europe, however, with its thousands of soccer teams and stronger local and regional ties, it was a natural development.

In recent years, the relegation battle, at least in England, is much more interesting than the fight for the championship of the Premier League. While the same two or three teams fight it out for the crown every year, several more are sucked into the abyss that is the desperate attempt to avoid the drop.

This year the races to the championship and to relegation are both shaping up to be interesting, thanks to the lack of a dominating club at the top and many middling to miserable ones at the other end of the spectrum. But while one of the usual suspects (either Man United or Arsenal) are likely to win the crown, nine or ten clubs, within six points of each other, are capable of playing badly enough over the last eight or nine matches of the season to warrant relegation.

Unfortunately for me and other Blackburn fans, one of those clubs that could face The Drop is the Rovers.  In the top ten and looking good just a few weeks ago, Rovers have managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, or at least a draw, on several occasions recently, including two weeks ago when they conceded a penalty in the last minute to lose 3-2 to Fulham, and last week when they had to come from two goals down at home to register a draw with Blackpool. Speculation has gone from wondering whether the club will be able to challenge for a Europa League spot to whether they will be playing in the Premier League next season.

I have to admit, though, that whether it's the glass-half-empty Rover fan, the masochist, or the republican (yes, little "r" republican) in me, I relish the fight to dodge The Drop. Nothing more energizes a fan base than supporting your club to survive to fight another day. And, I have to admit, I always relish the opportunity to chirp when a "Big Club" (like Newcastle two seasons ago) goes down.

How cool would it be to get to see an American pro team (insert team name here -- mine would be the Cowboys or the Yankees) struggle to maintain top flight status? Can you imagine the glee if Jerry Jones was faced with the prospect of a half-filled billion dollar stadium while his Cowboys play some semi-pro team from Waco?

I'll be there on Saturday morning, biting my nails and hoping the Rovers can pick up three or even one point against Arsenal (yeah, right) that would go a long way to avoiding The Drop. But I'll be pulling just as hard for West Ham and Birmingham (two self-proclaimed "Big Clubs") to lose and sink a little farther toward oblivion. What could be more American?

Nasl: Lowery si accasa ai Montreal Impact

I Montreal Impact hanno definito l'ingaggio del centrocampista difensivo statunitense Amir Lowery: nativo di Washington, classe 1983, prodotto della Wake Forest University.

Nel 2005, Lowery venne selezionato al Superdraft MLS dai Colorado Rapids e curiosamente nello stesso anno al draft del MISL dai Philadelphia KiXX nel futsal. La scelta del giocatore ricadde sul tradizionale calcio ad undici dove con la formazione di Denver scese in campo in due occasioni prima di essere mandato on loan in prestito in USL agli Atlanta Silverbacks.

Alla vigilia del torneo 2006 venne rilasciato dai Rapids, e solo l'anno successivo venne messo sotto contratto dai Kansas City Wizards che, tuttavia, lo impiegheranno esclusivamente nel torneo "riserve". Nel preseason 2008 sono i Wizards a scaricarlo, e per lui arriva una chiamata dall'allora rinati San Jose Earthquakes, ma anche con i californiani non si registrano presenze.

Nel 2009 Lowery approda ai Carolina Railhawks, prima in Usl-1 e poi ottenendo la conferma nella stagione 2010 in USSF D2 con cui arriva sino alla doppia finale con i Puerto Rico Islanders, collezionando complessivamente 48 presenze ed una rete.

Ad inizio 2011 tenta l'avventura europea venendo ingaggiato dalla neopromossa compagine di massima divisione finlandese FC Honka con cui scende in campo due volte in gare ufficiali il 5 e il 12 febbraio.

Il mancato ambientamento, però, spingono Lowery ad aprire le porte ad un ritorno in Nord America, dove gli Impact bruciano la concorrenza definendo l'ingaggio del ventesimo giocatore nel roster agli ordini del tecnico Marc Dos Santos.

Nasl: Nuova maglia per gli Strikers con due nuovi ingaggi

I Fort Lauderdale Strikers hanno presentato la loro nuova divisa ufficiale dai colori giallo-rossi a righe orizzontali, e per meglio completare la giornata di gloria il team ha definito l'ingaggio di altri due elementi da mettere a disposizione del tecnico Daryl Shore.

I due "volti nuovi" sono il 23enne portiere Phillip Lamarre e il 19enne centrocampista Patrick Otte. Lamarre arriva dai Tampa Bay FC con cui però non era mai sceso n campo lo scorso anno, e per alcune settimane era stato prestato ai Miami FC che sono gli odierni Strikers. Otte è un giovane californiano che recentemente aveva sostenuto anche un periodo di prova in Inghilterra con il Middlesbrough.

US Team: Jones, Pope e Stewart eletti nell'Hall of Fame

Tempo di elezioni per l'Hall of Fame dell'U.S. Federation che ha introdotto per l'anno 2011 il trio di illustri ex nazionali a stelle e strisce: Cobi Jones, Eddie Pope ed Earnest Stewart.

Con loro eletti nella categoria "Veteran" uno dei bomber prolifici della nazionale USA Bruce Murray che di fatto uscì dal gruppo di Bora Milutinovic alla vigilia dei mondiali del 1994 per non rientrarvi più e non approdando poi neppure alla successiva MLS.

Per la categoria "Builder" eletto invece l'ex c.t. di Italia 1990 Bob Gansler, ungherese di origini, che poi ha condotto i Kansas City Wizards ad un titolo MLS e ad una finale.

Death Cab for Cutie

You have probably heard the new Death Cab single by now, but if you haven't, I am embedding the video below. I have mixed feelings about Death Cab, but I think this song is great.

I discovered the band early, when someone put "Scientist Studies" from We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes (2000) on a mix for me. I saw them on The Photo Album tour in 2001, and there has been no looking back. When Death Cab is on, they are one of my favorite bands. Transatlanticism is my favorite album by the band, and my #6 album of the decade. Part of that is because of when and where I first heard it (in Zambia as I was falling love). Their two albums since have been minor (Plans) and major (Narrow Stairs) disappointments for me. I think Narrow Stairs is their low point, both musically (boring) and lyrically (jaded).

I have read lots of positive interviews and press about Codes and Keys, and this first song really impressed me and gave me hope they are on the right track. Plus with Ben Gibbard's marriage to Zooey Deschanel hopefully he has some positive experiences to write about!

You can preorder the album on their website, but honestly the options are far too expensive. I will order the vinyl on Amazon whenever it shows up there.

Hainault regala la prima gioia del 2011 al Canada

La nazionale di calcio del Canada punta ad una stagione di riscatto nel 2011, anno in cui partecipare con la selezione maschile alla prossima Gold Cup, senza dimenticare le aspirazioni di quella femminile nei prossimi mondiali di Germania.

Si spera nel conseguimento di risultati che possono dare un ulteriore slancio all'intero movimento che come testimoniano però le attività dei due club MLS e quella dei due della Nasl ha una robusta base di seguito in un pubblico caldo e competente che probabilmente meriterebbe un impegno maggiore da parte di una federazione a lungo troppo latitante.

Il 2011 della nazionale maggiore con l'effige della foglia d'acero sul petto si era aperto lo scorso 9 febbraio con una sconfitta, seppur di misura e molto dignitosa, al cospetto della Grecia a causa di uno svarione del giovane Straith che offrì l'assist vittoria a Ioannis Feftatzidis.

Ora arriva il primo sorriso del 2011 per la selezione guidata dal c.t. Stephen Hart che ad Antalya in Turchia ha superato ieri la Bielorussia grazie ad un gol del difensore degli Houston Dynamo Andrè Hainault al 58', sugli sviluppi di un corner del centrocampista dei RSL Will Johnson.

Gol importante perchè regala un successo che porta morale sia al giocatore che all'intero gruppo: basti pensare che Hainault con uno svarione aveva favorito il 5-o inflitto dall'Argentina a fine maggio in vista dei mondiali e che la nazionale avesse vinto appena una gara delle precedenti undici disputate.

Seconda apparizione tra i pali per il giovane Milan Borjan attualmente in forza ai serbi del Rad, mentre si sono rivisti rispetto alla precedente uscita capitan McKenna (Colonia) e Klukowski (Ankaragucu), Edgar (Burnley), Ledgerwood (Wehen Wiesbaden) ed Issey Nakajuna-Farran (Horsens).

US Team: il Paraguay manda al tappeto gli Usa

Sconfitta di misura nel secondo test amichevole di fine marzo per gli Usa che soccombono al cospetto del Paraguay nella sfida disputata all'LP Field di Nashville in Tennessee davanti ad un costistente pubblico.

Una sfida in cui ai punti gli americani avrebbero meritato almeno il pari, ma è noto a tutti gli osservatori di calcio internazionale le caratteristiche del Paraguay, quale compagine sempre ostica e difficile da affrontare per chiunque.

Bradley mischia le carte rispetto all'uscita con l'Argentina, ritorna al 4-4-2 classico con in porta Hahnemann e rivoluziona il pacchetto arretrato con Chandler e Bornstein esterni, De Merit ed il promettente Ream in mezzo; in mediana cerniera centrale composta da Edu e Bradley figlio, Dempsey e Donovan sulle fasce con tandem offensivo Altidore e Agudelo.

Il match si sblocca al 18' con una rete del centravanti del Benfica Oscar Cardozo, abile a raccogliere una palla vagante in area sugli sviluppi di un corner con gli Usa in quel frangente in dieci per un infortunio, e sottomisura girare alle spalle di "nonno" Marcus Hahnemann.

La risposta degli americani già nel primo tempo non si fa attendere, sebbene in attacco regni la confusione e nei fatti non giungono vere occasioni da gol per l'imprecisione diffusa così il portiere e capitano Ricardo Villar non è mai chiamato in causa. Anzi il Paraguay in chiusura di frazione sfiora il raddoppio, ma Hahnemann respinge con i pugni.

Il secondo tempo, aldilà del debutto in porta di David Yeldell, vede gli Usa ben più pimpanti nel gioco agevolati dal dinamismo dell'altro neo entrato Jermaine Jones e decisi a riequilibrare la gara: fioccano anche alcune occasioni, non sempre limpide, ma Villar riesce a tenere inviolata la porta con alcuni provvidenziali interventi, oltre ad un'occasionissima per Donovan che spara sull'esterno della rete da posizione favorevole.

AS Roma: Di Benedetto verso l'acquisizione del 60% delle quote

Febbrile due giorni d'incontri per il passaggio di proprietà dell'AS Roma: ed alla fine se non proprio una fumata bianca, arriva una fumata "grigia" che lascia intendere che la trattativa con la cordata guidata dall'italo-americano Thomas Di Benedetto proseguirà prossimamente.

Di Benedetto e Co. si sarebbero accordati con l'Unicredit e l'Italpetroli della famiglia Sensi per l'acquisto del 60% delle quote, sebbene sul tavolo restano da definire molteplici aspetti di natura legale e fiscale, e non a caso il probabile futuro patron giallorosso è ripartito alla volta degli Usa ma prima tutte le parti hanno emesso un comunicato con il quale si indica un termine di 20 giorni entro cui sarà definita la cessione del club al gruppo statunitense.

US Open Cup 2011: ai Timbers il primo preliminare

Primo turno preliminare di US Open Cup 2011 per la MLS che dovrà designare al termine di una ricca fase eliminatoria due team che si sommeranno alle sei già qualificate di diritto al tabellone principale: Columbus Crew, Dallas FC, Los Angeles Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake e Seattle Sounders.

Last night, the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings played a hockey game. A good one, in fact.

But it was marred by this Todd Bertuzzi elbow to the head of Blackhawks' forward Ryan Johnson.

The on-ice officials got it right. They gave him Bertuzzi game misconduct. Good for them. Oh the times, they are a changing. However slowly.

But today, after reviewing the hit, the NHL decided not to suspend Bertuzzi for even one single game. What the ....??? This, after they suspended Matt Cooke for 10 games, plus one round of the playoffs, so potentially 17 games.

Apparently, the league feels that Bertuzzi doesn't have a history of recidivist head hunting a'la Matt Cooke, somehow overlooking Bertuzzi's 2004 sucker punch of Steve Moore. And I strongly disagree with that. I think you do, in fact, have to factor in the sum total of Bertuzzi's career.

But even if I am to grant the NHL that Bertuzzi's cheap shot on Moore was a long time ago, even if I'm going to buy into the notion that Bertuzzi is a 'clean' player now, I still believe a suspension would be in order. If you want to send a message to players and coaches that dangerous shots to the head -- particularly involving elbows being thrown -- will not be tolerated. Were I hockey's discipline czar, I would have suspended Bertuzzi for the remainder of the regular season. Perhaps longer.

The hit is dangerous. The elbow up high was unnecessary. Bertuzzi is just lucky that Johnson is okay. That was luck. Nothing more. One of these days, the league's luck is going to run out.

I Tampa Bay FC del tecnico inglese Ricky Hill ampliano il proprio organico ingaggiando per la prossima stagione tre elementi, tutti con opzione anche per la successiva.

Si tratta del difensore Omar Jarun, e degli attaccanti Warren Ukah e Matt Clare. Quest'ultimo era tra i trialist in prova da alcune settimane e piccola curiosità si tratta del figlio di John Clare, ex difensore dei Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

Warren Ukah (foto sx) è un attaccante, 1985, nativo dello stato americano della Georgia, e vanta una buona esperienza a questi livelli avendo disputato diversi tornei con Atlanta Silverbacks, Rochester Rhinos, e lo scorso torneo ai Minnesota Stars. Nel suo curriculum anche esperienze nelle altre leghe minori del soccer, oltre anche delle iniziali esperienze nel Village del torneo giamaicano.

La più curiosa storia riguarda Omar Jarun (foto dx), difensore classe 1983, nato in Kuwait da una famiglia di esuli palestinesi per poi trasferirsi e cresciere in Georgia negli Usa, militando nei Chicago Fire Premiere, poi negli Atlanta Silverbacks e nei Vancouver Whitecaps. Nelle ultime due stagioni ha militato in Polonia nel torneo di prima divisione con Flota Swinoujscie e Pogon Ssczecin (rispettivamente 34 e 12 gare).

Nasl: Burse difenderà la porta dei Puerto Rico Islanders

Nuovo estremo difensore per i Puerto Rico Islanders che hanno trovato il sostituto di Bill Gaudette passato ai Montreal Impact, si tratta di Ray Burse Jr.

Burse, nativo del 1986 in Kentucky, è reduce da una stagione quella 2010 di inattività dopo esser stato tagliato da Dallas, sebbene nel corso della stessa abbia poi svolto diversi trials tra Columbus Crew e Real Salt Lake.

In principio di questa stagione il portiere prodotto dell'Ohio State è stato chiamato a difendere la porta dei Crew nella doppia sfida dei quarti della Concacaf Champions League 2010/11 coincidenza vuole contro i RSL. Si è trattato però di un contratto a tempo visto che sia Hesmer che Gruenebaum non avevano ancora ritrovato la forma ottimale dopo i rispettivi infortuni

Nel 2005 debutta in PDL con i Chicago Fire Premiere, nel 2006 l'approdo in MLS selezionato come detto da Dallas, dove nella prima annata si disimpegna esclusivamente nel torneo riserve, e debutta in campionato nel 2007. Nella stagione 2008 gli Hoops lo mandano in prestito on loan ai Portland Timbers in USL-1 dove disputa dieci gare di cui sette tenendo imbattuta la propria porta. Complessivamente con la maglia dei texani scende in campo in 25 gare di campionato, ma accumula anche una buona esperienza tra US Open Cup e Superliga.

Al nuovo luogo è seguito l'annuncio dell'ingaggio del centrocampista argentino Eduardo Coudet, recentemente tagliato dai Philadelphia Union con cui militava dalla scorsa estate. Nel curriculum di Coudet, classe 1974, spiccano la lunga militanza nel River Plate in patria e le esperienze estere in Spagna e Messico.

Nasl: nuovo sito e nuovo commissioner

Ventata di novità alla Nasl che ha compiuto un restyling del proprio sito ufficiale (www.nasl.com)in vista dell'imminente inizio della stagione 2011.

La novità più grossa è però la nomina del primo Commissioner che sarà David Downs che si insiederà il prossimo 4 aprile, ovvero alla vigilia del nuovo torneo. Downs vanta un'esperienza trentennale nell'industriale dei broadcast televisivi con Abc ed Univision.

Another state worker taking your hard earned money has the nerve to complain.

According to a new Field poll, a plurality of Californians now feel that state worker pensions are too generous. With scandals like the Bell city employees' pay packages and a town like Vallejo filing for bankruptcy instead of paying the pensions of cops and firefighters, I understand how public resentment has grown. Closer to my situation, the pay packages for people at the district level of the Peralta Community Colleges, where a boatload of people are making between $100,000 to $300,000 a year each, are more than a little grating when workers who actually makes students' lives better are getting canned left and right, like teachers, librarians, facilities workers and janitors.

But here's a guy sucking at the public teat who would actually like to tell you that he is getting screwed at the pension level and there should be something done about it.

That guy is Matty Boy.

Now that I work for the state of California and I'm part of the state pension plan, this means I will get docked Social Security benefits. I understand the idea is "double dipping" and I will note that I don't get any Social Security deduction from my check at Laney.

The thing is, I worked for more than twenty years out in the private sector before becoming a sponge off the taxpayers, having the gall to think that the time I spend 'splainin' order of operations or the quadratic formula or the Central Limit Theorem to community college students is actual gainful employment. More than that, I'm a part-timer, so I have to work several jobs to keep a roof above my head, and some of those gigs are still in the private sector. That means Social Security is taken out of those checks and I will get less of it than the average Joe, even though the system is still expected to be solvent when I get to retirement age, whatever age that scummy old coot Alan Simpson thinks that is.

And much more than this, I am NOT a unique case.

The current system has a sliding scale, but it depends on how may years you were paid "substantial earnings", a number which has increased over time because of inflation. If somebody has had a state gig his or her entire life, then it makes sense that since that person paid nothing into Social Security, he or she should just get by on a state pension and whatever savings were accumulated. But folks like me who have become state workers late in life and still have to work part time at companies that are taking Social Security out of each paycheck will never see any benefit from that removed money if we do not work enough hours outside the public employee system.

To me, it's just another example of a tax system designed to make the rich richer and the non-rich poorer. They use "small business owners" as human shields, but the very rich are robbing us blind when there has been enough growth in this country's economy in the past forty years that the tide should have lifted all the boats, not just the yachts.

Top 5 Craziest Final Fours Ever

Last year, when Northern Iowa took out Kansas in the second round of the tourney, it forced me to revisit the top 10 upsets in NCAA tourney history. I'm not sure who I take off that list, but I have to include VCU's run very near the top, particularly as nobody was more beat upon than VCU heading into the tourney: they had to play a 'play in' game, they were likely the 68th and last team selected for the tournament and every talking head within ear-shot of a microphone cried foul, opining that VCU didn't deserve the last bid, they generally sucked and so on; then they went out and beat Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and Kansas.

If VCU is a complete fall over and get the smelling salts kind of shock, the return of last year's runner-up Butler is less of a shock. Still the Bulldogs were an 8 seed (which pretty much tells you where the selection committee thought they'd end up) and Butler is the only team from a mid-major to play into the Final Four in back to back years since the 1990 and 1991 UNLV teams (since the tourney expanded to 64, that is.) Pretty impressive on Butler's part, no?

If 2008 was the most predictable, chalk Final Four of all time, with four No. 1 seeds meeting (yawn, big, big yawn), 2011 is the antidote to the chalk. If you think this is the nuttiest Final Four ever, you would be right.

What Final Fours fill out the remaining Top 5 Most unlikely? To determine that, I've used the very scientific method of relying on my prodigious memory plus google, and starting with the Bird-Magic Final Four (1979).

1. 2011 -- UConn (3), Kentucky (4), Butler (8) and VCU (12*). There has never been a year like this, not even one that comes close. To have two mid-major teams in the Final Four is stunning. Most years, we don't even get one. But to have the Colonial Athletic Conference and and the Horizon League represented makes this THE most unlikely Final Four of All-Time. By a ton, in fact. VCU, a 12* seed (don't you think that a 12 seed that had to 'play in' deserves an asterisk?) and Butler, an 8 seed, have outlasted all four No. 1 seeds, all four No. 2 seeds and all but one of the No. 3 seeds. No way on God's green earth did anybody see that coming. You have to go the whole way back to 1980 to find a Final Four sans a single No. 1 seed (bear in mind, that was when the tourney field was only 48 teams.) Amazing. 31 straight years with at least one No. 1 seed in the Final Four.


2. 2006 -- LSU (4), UCLA (2) George Mason (11), and Florida (3). I still marvel at George Mason's run to the Final Four. There's always an upset in every tournament, but for GM to run through the field to the Final Four ... well, we hadn't seen anything like it in a long time. And I didn't expect that we'd see anything like it for many years to come. Plus, in 2006, we had no clue how good that Florida team was yet.


3. 1980 -- Iowa (5), Louisville (2), Purdue (6), and UCLA (8). Okay, this is a collection of household names (Iowa less so, unless you're counting football and wrestling), but notice the complete lack of No. 1 seeds. 1980 was the last time we had a Final Four notable for the absence of 1 seeds.

4. 1979 -- Indiana State (1), Depaul (2), Michigan State (2), Penn (9). From a field of 40. Yeah, yeah. Indiana State was a 1 seed, but really, this is way before expanded cable and light-years before the internet. Had anybody outside of Terre Haute seen Indiana State play prior to the tournament? Penn was in the Final Four? Penn? As in the University of Pennsylvania of the Ivy League. Yup. Bird. Magic. Everybody paid attention. Nobody saw this coming, but it fixated a nation. And we haven't stopped watching since.

5. 1985 -- Georgetown (1), St. John's (1), Villanova (8) and Memphis State (2). I went back and forth on this one (plus the two bonuses below.) Two No. 1 seeds? Power conference? But, what are the odds that one conference would send three teams to the Final Four? It hasn't been done since. Then there is the whole giant upset of Georgetown. In fact, I think that I penciled them into my bracket as the winner of the whole thing back on Valentine's Day, 1985, that's how good they were. So, for the unlikely upset, plus the Big Beast having three teams advance, I'm including this as No. 5 on the list.

Honorable Mention: 1983 -- Houston (1), Louisville (1), Georgia (4), N.C. State (6). (from a field of 52.) I'm including this because Houston Phi Slamma Jamma was, indeed, a power team, but not from a power conference. Then, you consider the amazing upset in the final by Jimmy V's N.C. State team, and I had to include 1983.

Honorable Mention. 1991 - UNC (1), Kansas (2), Duke (2), and UNLV (1). I thought I should mention this Final Four because this is ONLY other time (since the tourney expanded to 64 teams) that a team from a mid-major conference made it through to the Final Four two years in a row. I know that UNLV was a powerhouse and I know that a Final Four rounded out by UNC, Duke, an Kansas is hardly a line up of obscure underdogs, but Tarkanian's Runnin' Rebs deserve at least a cursory nod.

MLS Week #2: il sunto delle altre gare

Dopo l'anticipo tra Sounders e Dynamo, proviamo a tracciare un breve sunto di quanto successo nella Week #2 della MLS 2011 che ancora una volta non è riuscita ad evitare l'insolita sovrapposizione con la disputa di un match della nazionale a stella e strisce.

Infatti, il torneo non si è fermato per l'impegno di Donovan e compagni, ma almeno grazie al gioco dei fusi si è riusciti ad evitare la simultaneità con Usa-Argentina, il paradosso che risalta è però che tutte queste gare siano state programmate al sabato con l'intera domenica priva di qualsiasi appuntamento.

La nostra sintesi parte dall'unico pareggio a reti bianche, ovvero la sfida tra Columbus Crew e Red Bulls New York: i gialloneri di casa devono ancora trovare la giusta identità dopo il grande rinnovamento intrapreso, mentre per il team della "big apple" i problemi maggiori erano costituiti da un roster falcidiato da assenze in massa. Alla vigilia il team ha dovuto ingaggiare ben due portieri, Alex Horwath (ex MLS Pool, in passato a lungo in prova ai Wizards) e la scelta del draft Maurer. Occasioni per entrambe le parti e pari salomonico per scacciare le paure di entrambe.

Ad aprire le "danze" in ordine cronologico era stata la sfida tra Toronto e Portland Timbers: formazioni ancora alla ricerca di una loro precisa identità, il sostegno del pubblico del BMO Fied sospinge i "reds" che trovano nell'ala olandese, scuola Ajax, Javier Martina il match winner con una doppietta. La prima nel primo tempo con un preciso diagonale su assist di De Rosario, e bis concesso con una spettacolare voleè direttamente su un lungo lancio del portiere Frei.

Sconfitta anche per i Vancouver Whitecaps, l'altro expansion team, sconfitto di misura dai Philadelphia Union (1-0) dopo aver giocato in dieci quasi tutta la ripresa per il rosso all'attaccante francese Hassli che disputa un duello estremamente fisico ai limiti del regolamento con Califf. Decide il match una comoda appoggio in rete del guatemalteco Carlos Ruiz su assist di LeToux.

Stenta a ritrovarsi invece il Dallas FC superato a domicilio dai San Jose Earhquakes che ritrovano i gol del bomber Chris Wondolowski: una doppietta di pregevole fattura quella del capocannoniere del passato torneo la prima con stop di petto e conclusione al volo di sinistro, e seconda con imperioso stacco di testa.

I New England Revolution hanno la meglio (2-1) sui DC United: un match condizionato - a mio avviso da una pessima direzione di gara - con i Revs a segno all'8' con Schilawski che però si avvale di un evidente controllo di mano in area. Il raddoppio arriva non molti minuti dopo grazie ad un dubbio rigore conquistato da Phelan e trasformato da capitan Shalrie Joseph. Nel secondo tempo Olsen mischia le carte e prova a rientrare in partita ma le speranze si fermano ad un rigore, fallo su Ngwenya, trasformato da Charlie Davies all'80' (terzo centro stagionale). Nel finale da segnalare un rosso a Jakovic per un accenno di rissa.

Il cartellino rosso al centravanti messicano Omar Bravo per aver negato una chiara occasione da reti agli avversari è il grimaldello che sposta gli equilibri in una sfida intensa come quella tra Chicago Fire e Sporting Kansas City. Uno-due dei Fire con il tandem offensivo uruguagio Chaves (rigore) e Puerari, accorcia le distanze poi il difensore degli ospiti Besler, nuovo allungo per la formazione di De Los Cobos con il guatemalteco Marco Pappa. Il neoentrato Teal Bunbury sigla poi il 3-2 che però non muta sino all'epilogo.

I campioni in carica dei Colorado Rapids espugnano il terreno dei Chivas Usa grazie ad un contropiede finalizzato dalla veloce punta Quincy Amarikwa, innescata da Smith, impiegato in luogo del giamaicano Cummings in coppia con l'irlandese Folan.

Il match clou di giornata era però la riproposizione della finale MLS Cup 2009, con i Real Salt Lake che hanno maramaldeggiato contro dei Los Angeles Galaxy confusionari e pasticcioni.

Un autentico monologo quello dell''undici di Jason Kreis che pronti via trovano la rete con il giamaicano Andy Williams. I Galaxy sfiorano l'immediato pari con una punizione di Beckham che trova una deviazione spiazzante che però si stampa sul montante a Rimando battutto.

Le crepe della difesa dei californiani però si evidenziano nel giro di pochi minuti e trovano gloria gli argentini Espindola e Morales (doppietta, il primo su rigore e il secondo con conclusione nel sette dal limite) e il brasiliano Paulo Araujo jr (suo il quarto centro, ma anche il fallo che genera il rigore). Nel finale su uno spiovente di Beckham, incomprensione tra Olave e Rimando, e per Juan Pablo Angel arriva il primo gol con la maglia dei Galaxy.

Sunday Numbers 2.0, Vol. 6: Solving quadratics and the imaginary number i.

You might dimly remember the quadratic formula from a class you took in high school or college. One memorization technique is to sing the formula to the tune of Pop Goes The Weasel. This week, we are going to look at the formula, notice a problem that arises and see if we can get around it.

The original impetus of the problem was this. We have two numbers j and k, but instead of giving you the two numbers directly I tell you their sum j + k and their product jk. For example, if I tell you the sum is 10 and the product 21, with a little guess and check you should be able to figure out on of the numbers is 3 and the other 7. It doesn't really matter which one we call j and which one we call k, since 7 + 3 = 3 + 7 and 7 * 3 = 3 * 7. In terms of our variables a, b and c, the sum is -b and the product is c, while we set a = 1.

The problem is that guess and check can come up craps. If say the sum is 2 and the product is 5, you won't be able to guess the answer. Even more annoying, no pair of real numbers works. In this case, consider the quadratic formula where a = 1, b = 2 and c = 5. The quadratic formula has a square root in it sqrt(b² - 4ac), and the mathematical expression b² - 4ac is called the discriminant. Remember that we are not supposed to take the square roots of negative numbers, but in this case 2² - 4*1*5 = -16. We know the square root of 16 is 4, but what is the square root of -16? It was decided that is was 4 times the square root of -1. This means the two numbers that add up to 2 and multiply to 5 are 1 + 2*sqrt(-1) and 1 - 2*sqrt(-1).

Just because they wanted to solve all problems of this form and not for any practical application, mathematicians started working with the square root of -1, which the called the imaginary number and was eventually symbolized by the letter i. Little did they realized this new system of real numbers combined with imaginary numbers, which together are called complex numbers, would have real world applications in fields such as electrical engineering and quantum mechanics that were not even discovered when this algebra problem was kicking around. This is not the last time some mathematician works on a problem for his or her own amusement only to have practical applications discovered for this branch of math many years later, sometimes decades and sometimes centuries after the fact.

Orchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Chick Peas

To my mind, there are a couple of ways you can go with pasta. I love thin spaghettis -- capellinis and angel hairs. Then there are the tubes -- penne, ziti and rigatoni. For the record, I hate rigatoni. Always have. I cannot eat them, even to this day. Then there are the other toothsome varieties and of those, I am partial to orchiette and troffie. For this recipe, I like to use orchiette, little thumb-print type pastas that we called 'flying saucers' when I was a kid.

I pair my flying saucers with dark greens and chick peas. This may, in fact, be my favorite application for broccoli rabe. I admit that I am partial to dark greens -- I could eat kale or swiss chard or broccoli rabe every day of the week, but don't let the fact that broccoli rabe possesses many health benefits fool you. I eat this because it is delicious and, even if you don't generally like dark greens, this is a treatment that even you less adventurous food friends will enjoy.

You will need:
1 large bundle of broccoli rabe
1 can of chick peas (drained and rinsed)
1/4 pancetta
4 cloves of garlic -- very finely diced
pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
1 pound of orchiette pasta

The prep:
Bring a large pot of water to a boil while you clean the broccoli rabe by cutting away the thick woody stems; then coarsely chop. When the water comes to a boil, salt it and add the broccoli rabe. Broccoli rabe, or rapini, can be very bitter. I find that boiling it for just a minute or two before sauteeing mellows out the bitterness. After you've boiled the broccoli rabe, drain it and set it aside.

Put on a pot of water for your orchiette.

Finely dice the garlic and also dice the pancetta into small cubes. Heat a sautee pan, add a tablespoon or so of olive oil and toss in the pancetta and garlic. Reduce the heat, because you want the garlic and pancetta to cook pretty well, but you don't want to scorch them. After about 5 to 7 minutes, add the rinsed chick peas and the broccoli rabe. At this point, you just need to sautee this for a few more minutes.

By now, your pasta water should be at a rolling boil. Add a healthy pinch of kosher salt and the orchiette. When the pasta is about halfway done, add a pinch of crushed red pepper to the broccoli rabe and chick pea sautee pan, along with about a ladle full of the pasta water. As with all pasta preparations, remove the orchiette about one minute before they are al dente and cook them for a minute or two in the sautee pan with the broccoli rabe mixture.

Serve with freshly grated pecorino romano cheese.

US Team: Agudello acciuffa l'Argentina e regala un prestigioso pari

Amichevole di prestigio con risultato altrettanto prestigioso ed incoraggiante per gli Usa che al New Meadowlands di East Rutherford in New Jersey fermano sull'1-1 l'Argentina.

Risultato positivo, ma anche parzialmente bugiardo perchè soprattutto nel primo tempo la "seleccion albiceleste" ha messo alla frusta la difesa americana con il trio offensivo DiMaria-Messi-Lavezzi e solo l'imprecisione oltre che la bravura di un sempre reattivo Tim Howard evitano un passivo pesante.

Il primo tempo è quasi a senso unico, la prima occasione del match, al 4' è per Clint Dempsey ma il suo diagonale è fuori misura. Da qui inizia un monologo argentino fatto di palleggio stretto, dinamismo, ed accellerazioni individuali del trio dei "tenori" dell'attacco argentino che costringe non di rado gli americani anche ad interventi spesso rudi.

L'unico tentativo di break americano è un contropiede corale con Donovan che offre a Dempsey una nuova occasione, il primo tentativo dell'ala del Fulham è ribattuto da Rojo, il secondo tentativo centrale si spegne tra le braccia del portiere Andujar. Sotto l'aspetto tattico nella formazione di Bradley non convince principalmente la posizione di Maurice Edu che spesso si ritrova ad agire a ridosso di Altidore, senza in realtà costituire un elemento di appoggio per i compagni.

Altra cosa il "tango" argentino con Lionel Messi show che duetta al limite, poi accellera ed arriva sul fondo da dove serve Di Maria la cui conclusione sottomisura è ribattuto da Howard, sulla corta respinta si catapulta il centrocampista dell'Inter Esteban Cambiasso (42') che spedisce il pallone sotto la traversa.

Nell'intervallo Bradley ridisegna la propria formazione inserisce la giovane punta dei Red Bulls New York Agudelo al fianco di Altidore, arretra Edu nel suo ruolo più naturale di mediano lasciando negli spogliatoi Jermaine Jones. L'altro cambio avviene sul ruolo di terzino destro, dove Jonathan Spector lascia al debuttante Timothy Chandler. Il giovane ventenne militante nel Norimberga offre subito una maggior iniziativa sulla fascia con molta irruenza e forse emozione rimediando subito un cartellino giallo.

L'atteggiamento americano finalmente muta, e con le due punte di ruolo si registra subito una maggior profondità, e non è un caso che il gol arrivi su un calcio di punizione conquistato da Altidore ai venticinque metri: Donovan pennella in area, testa di capitan Bocanegra al centro area, respinge Andujar, ma è lesto il neoentrato Juan Agudelo (59') a ribadire in rete. Bissando la rete segnata al suo debutto contro il SudAfrica nell'ultima uscita del 2010.

L'Argentina prova a riprendere le redini della sfida, ma gli spazi sono diminuiti gli americani difendono meglio, chiudendo con puntuali raddoppi le sortite di Lavezzi e Di Maria, e poi c'è un indomito Lionel Messi che sino all'ultimo prova ad impensierire Howard, e raccogliendo con i suoi spunti gli applausi sia dei tifosi argentini che di quelli americani che alla fine possono applaudire un risultato ben più positivo di quanto forse era preventivabile alla vigilia.

Il 29 marzo Usa nuovamente in campo a Nashville in Tennessee contro il Paraguay (ieri sconfitto ad Oakland per 3-0 dal Messico, doppietta di Hernandez e Guardado), mentre l'Argentina disputerà una seconda amichevole a San Josè in Costa Rica.
